Rodri Sidelined for Extended Period, Requires Surgery After Knee Injury

Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, known as Rodri or Rodrigo, is a Spanish professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Premier League club Manchester City and the Spanish national team. After stints with Villarreal and Atlético Madrid in La Liga, Rodri joined Premier League club Manchester City in 2019.

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has said the club are still not entirely sure what the extent of Rodri’s injury is. However, Guardiola admitted Rodri will be out for an extended period of time. The Spanish midfielder was taken off in the first half of their 2-2 draw with Arsenal last Sunday. Multiple reports have claimed Rodri has torn his anterior cruciate ligament and could miss the rest of the season. “When you are without the best midfielder in the world for a long time it is a big blow,” Guardiola said after their Carabao Cup win over Watford on Tuesday night. “But my duty is to find a solution. “When a player is irreplaceable, we have to do it as a team.”

If anyone had seen a lengthy layoff coming, it might have been Rodri himself. Just days before going down with his knee injury against Arsenal, the midfielder had mooted that players could go on strike due to the increasingly claustrophobic calendar. Over the past two seasons, Rodri played 131 matches for club and country.
Arguments about rotation may be put forward and perhaps he has fallen victim to his irreplaceable status but there simply should not be that number of games to play. And that’s before the expanded formats of the Champions League and Club World Cup that have come into effect this season.
